Sheila Corby and Jenny Thomson made history at this year’s carnival in Castle Carrock by going head to head in the village’s first ever hat competition.

The judges couldn’t decide on which of the pair had created the best hat and decided to split the winning prize between the two of them.

“This was the first year it’s been done and I hope it takes off in years ahead because we were the only two who entered,” said Sheila.

“It started off with a straw hat then some felt and a glue gun, that’s the secret.”

Sheila and Jenny were among a huge crowd that gathered in the centre of the village, near Brampton, on Saturday for their annual carnival.

This year’s theme celebrated all things royal in honour of the Queen’s 90th birthday.

The event started off with a procession through the centre of the village, beginning at the primary school, ending up at the hall.

Organiser Jane Helliwell said: “This is such a community effort involving everybody such as the school, the WI and the leek club for example all taking part. “Despite the weather it has been a very good turnout, there’s been plenty of people about.

“We had a collection of traditional stalls, a charity bake sale in aid of Eden Valley Hospice and a BBQ.”

Following the procession everyone gathered outside the village hall for the presentation of the carnival king and queen Eva O’Connor and Thomas McLaughlin, the best fancy dress and best hat.

Sporting games followed the presentations, including some football target practice with a cutout of Prince William as the target.

Refreshments and live music were also enjoyed.
