Singer Andrew Johnston showed he had lost none of his talent for enchanting an audience when he returned to his hometown of Carlisle.

Andrew, who captured the public's heart and attention when he competed in Britain's Got Talent in 2008, performed to a packed Carlisle Cathedral along with six friends for a night of opera.

The 22-year-old, originally from Stanwix, performed a variety of opera music and German Lieder songs at 'A Night at the Opera' with Andrew and Friends.

Those six friends are: bass Connor Baiano, bass baritones John Holland Avery and Ed Kaye, tenor David Thomas, soprano Myrna Tennant and mezzo-soprano Ellen Mawhinney.

Andrew is now in his fourth and final year studying opera at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Andrew said: "It was a fantastic evening and the Cathedral was packed. I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. People seemed to really enjoy it and have even asked me to do it again."

Andrew was also keen to get the cathedral's choir involved in the event.

On the night they acted as the opera chorus accompanying the soloists, and also sang their own excerpts.
