Plans for a development of 40 new homes in Wetheral would lead to an expansion of a nearby primary school.

Story Homes has tabled detailed plans for a site west of Steele's Bank for a mix of two to five bedroom houses.

Outline permission for up to 50 units was granted in 2016. It now plans to build 41 homes, of which 30 per cent would be affordable.

Granted permission of a reserved matters application, the development would lead to an expansion of Cumwhinton Primary School, with story homes contributing £120,000.

Funding of more than £90,000 would go towards improvements to the village football pitch and changing room, with any remaining money to improve play facilities at Wetheral playing field.

Contributions of £33,250 and £10,500 would be made by the developer to go towards secondary school transport and an extension of a local footpath, respectively.

The proposals also incorporate new traffic calming measures, including a gateway feature and road narrowing.

Adam McNally, land manager at Story Homes, said: “Wetheral is a highly desirable location and subject to planning permission, we look forward to bringing a high specification Story Homes development that is fitting to the village.

“We have sought to address local issues raised at the outline application. Our plans include attractive street scenes and open space, local highways improvements, and affordable housing for local people.

"We will also make financial contributions towards meeting the education needs arising from our development. In addition, we will deliver economic benefits back into the local area by supporting existing local businesses and employing local subcontractors and suppliers."

A decision on the latest application is expected in February 2018.
