Senior councillors visited to mark the opening game on the new football pitch at Penrith AFC.

Club officials were joined by Eden Council leader Kevin Beaty, Elaine Martin and Paula Breen for the first game of the new season at the Frenchfield Park Stadium.

The district council has recently worked with the club to fund, procure and supervise works to renovate the playing surface.

Ian White, club secretary, said it was "a great day for the club".

He added: "The work enabled us to play the style of football we aspire to, but which proved virtually impossible in previous seasons and resulted in a notable victory over West Auckland Town.

"Hopefully the rich entertainment on display will help to encourage increased attendances."

Mr White said the club was extremely grateful for financial support from both the Football Foundation and Eden Council.

He added it had "enabled the much needed work to be carried out”.

The game, on Saturday, ended in a 2-1 home win.
