Crowds piled into pubs and bars across Cumbria for England’s crunch Euro 2016 tie against Wales.

Many workers from across the county took time off to take in the game, which kicked off at the slightly awkward time of 2pm.

In Carlisle, pubs and bars were awash with fans kitted out in shirts and carrying flags to cheer on Roy Hodgson’s side.

In the hour leading up to kick off, the city’s Walkabout bar – which was a popular haunt for the opening game against Russia – continued to fill with Three Lions fanatics.

Among them was 22-year-old Lee McGregor, from Currock, who had taken time off from his job at Pioneer to watch the game.

“I only asked to have the day off on Tuesday, but it wasn’t a problem,” he told The Cumberland News. “It’s the game of the tournament for England and I wasn’t going to miss it.”

Dom Simon, who lives close to the city centre, recently returned from France, where he was part of the crowd at Marseille’s Stade Velodrome that saw English hearts broken by a late Russian equaliser.

The 22-year-old, who works at The Range, on Currock Road, said: “I’ve taken about three weeks off in total for the tournament.

“I was over in France and I’m flying back out on Sunday for the game against Slovakia. I’ve been back in and done a few shifts in between.”

Asked about the ongoing trouble between England and Russia fans, he said: “It was quite bad, but I don’t think it’ll be like that from now on because they’re not as close to one another.”

Ryan Pearson, 22, from Harraby, was looking forward to the game so much that he sought to take a day’s annual leave from his job at Maplin Electronics weeks in advance.

“I think I booked the day off about a month ago,” he said. “I’ve been looking forward to it for ages.

“As soon as the draw was made I knew I’d have to look at getting the day off.”
