Pupils at Wigton’s Nelson Thomlinson School embarked on a health kick thanks to help from youth workers.

As part of its Little Fruit and Veg Project, Wigton Youth Station linked up with the school to provide each pupil with a free portion of fruit, which was supplied by local grocer, Lightfoots.

Wigton Youth Station also worked with the school’s head cook to encourage pupils to make healthier choices.

“It started from a survey that showed a large number of pupils weren’t eating enough fruit and veg,” Sam Massey, a youth worker at Wigton Youth Station told The Cumberland News .

“We had a big response from around 900 young people and staff as well and the results were quite overwhelming.

“We wanted to encourage people to eat more fruit and veg, which is why we got in touch with the school. They were extremely co-operative with us and were also keen to help staff and pupils make healthier changes to their lifestyle.”

The visit also coincided with the school’s sports day. Sam said that she hoped staff from the youth station will be able to continue promoting their healthy eating message.

“We’ve built up a good relationship with the school and they’ve been supportive towards what we are trying to achieve,” she said.

“Hopefully that will continue and we’ll be able to put on more healthy eating events in future.”
