The partner of a missing climber says the light in her life has been switched off.

Liam Day, 26, was last seen a week ago today, when he set off for a day’s climbing on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.

Emily Brown reported him missing at 12.30am that night, after he failed to return home.

With seven days now passed, and the search for him scaled back, his heartbroken partner paid tribute to the man she adored.

“Liam was the kindest, selfless and unique person you could find,” Emily said. “[He was] a George Bailey of the modern age, with more friends than most people could wish for.”

She revealed that Liam, originally from Tirril, near Penrith but who had been living in Southampton, was due to have begun his final year of medicine at university yesterday after working hard to achieve his goals.

Emily continued: “He had worked so hard and would have made a wonderful doctor. He was an incredibly clever man who had a first in physics from Durham Uni.

“The light in my life has switched off and I can’t imagine a world without his smiling face and love.”

She added: “He was also completely devoted to my two boys, Dylan and Sebastian. He called them his boys.

“He was very proud of them.”

Liam is believed to have been deep water climbing – also known as deep-water soloing – which involves using a rope to lower yourself down a cliff, and then climbing back up unsupported.

His car was located in Durlston Road near Durlston Country Park, and some climbing equipment was found one mile west of Anvil Point.

An extensive air, sea and land search of the area was carried out by Dorset Police, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Swanage and St Albans, two Swanage RNLI lifeboats and the Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter.

Members of public also rallied around, with friends of Liam heading to the coast to help in the search for the missing climber.

A spokesman for the police force told the News & Star yesterday that there are “no active searches” at this stage, but inquiries are ongoing.

“If somebody reports something then that will of course change,” he added.

Liam is described as white, 5ft 8ins tall, of slim build, with blue eyes and a ginger beard.
