The life of a renowned Carlisle author is to be celebrated at the city's library.

A new public meeting room at the library, in The Lanes, is to be named in memory of Margaret Forster.

It will be officially opened by her husband, Carlisle-born journalist and author Hunter Davies, on July 12.

Forster was a member of Carlisle Public Library – then in Tullie House - from an early age, taking out six books a week regularly.

She was a prolific author of more than 40 books. Her second novel, Georgy Girl, was made popular with a memorable film starring Lynn Redgrave and Charlotte Rampling.

The Margaret Forster Room is decorated with framed book covers, photographs and some of her writings, including an early article she wrote in 1956 for the then Carlisle and County High School for Girls’ magazine, entitled Climbing in Winter.

She researched her book ‘Hidden Lives’ and ‘Rich Desserts and Captains Thin’ (Story of Carrs) in Carlisle Library.

The room - created as part of a revamp which has seen new public toilets open in the shopping centre - will be available for public hire.
