Families going along to this year’s fireshow in Carlisle’s Bitts Park can enjoy a jam-packed day of fun in the run-up to the annual extravaganza.

A package of free activities is being held in the city centre as part of the build-up to Carlisle City Council’s fire spectacular which is expected to attract around 35,000 people on Saturday, October 31.

Between 2pm and 6pm, the council, supported by CFM Radio, will lay on street entertainment by the Bread & Butter Company who will dress as firecrackers.

There will also be performances by Carlisle Dance Academy, the Gandini Jugglers and Calvos – a stilt walking and juggling group. Street theatre will be provided by The Fairly Famous Family.

Anne Quilter, the council’s portfolio holder for culture, health, leisure and young people, said: “The activities aim to encourage families to make a visit to the city centre as part of the build up to the Bitts Park Fireshow.

There will be lots of exciting activities and we’d encourage residents and visitors to make a visit to the city centre Funday.”

The fireshow itself will feature a 30ft-high bonfire with an animated dragon, wizards, sorcery, a choir and a candle-lit procession. It will be lit at 7pm.

It will be followed at around 7.20pm by the firework display.

Admission is free but there will be a charity collection with all donations going towards the Rotary Club of Carlisle South and the Mayor’s Charity Fund.

Carlisle Fireshow began in 1987 as a community event designed to bring families together for a fun night out.

About 200 people were expected to attend the first event but it attracted a 2,000-strong crowd.
