A flood-hit play area has finally been reopened after being ruined in December's floods.

The Charlotte Terrace play park in Botcherby, Carlisle was damaged by Storm Desmond, leaving youngsters without anywhere to enjoy themselves.

After months of hard work, the city is finally making a recovery and on Tuesday children turned out for the official reopening of the play area following a £32,000 overhaul.

Councillor Chris Southward, portfolio holder for environment and transport at Carlisle City Council, said: “In the days following the flood a lot was said about this city’s powers of recovery and resilience.

"I think the refurbishment of this play area is a good example of that resilience.

"It would have been easy to write it off and forget about it, but we chose to raise the funds, consult local children and replace the ruined play area with brand-new, state of the art equipment."

He added: "I’d like to thank everybody involved in bringing the project together including Jeannie and James from our Green Spaces team; Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust and Cumbria County Council for their generous grants and the Botcherby ward councillors for their support.

"Special thanks are due to Helen Fisher and everybody at Botcherby Community Centre especially all the children who helped with the design."
