There's just a few days left to give support to a charity which is bidding to win crucial funding for a new sensory garden - with the cause already receiving some high-profile backing.

Wigton-based Chrysalis Cumbria, which provides support for people with a wide range of disabilities, is hoping to bring its idea to life with a £25,000 grant from the Masonic Charitable Foundation.

It is in the running for a grant, which would see the creation of a new sensory garden - but need the public's help to win the cash.

The Freemasons are giving away £3m to 300 charities across England and Wales.

Wigton's most famous son, broadcaster Melvyn Bragg, is backing the campaign.

Lord Bragg said: "This is an important praiseworthy and generous local initiative.

"It speaks well of the town and for those who want to make it a better place for all.

"Wigton can be very proud of itself because of Chrysalis."

Businesses are also getting involved, with many shops putting up posters or urging customers to vote for the charity.

Bronja Twentyman, of Wigton’s chamber of trade, said: “Shops in Wigton are doing what they can to support Chrysalis to win this vote.

"We’ve always supported the charity as I think it’s important to have something like this in town.

"It’s nice to see how they can get into the town each day with their carers."

The public vote closes on Monday.

Pam Oddy, business manager, said: "It has been fantastic to get so much support from people around Wigton.

"Hopefully, we can get enough votes to secure the funding to create this wonderful sensory garden to enrich the lives of the members at Chrysalis."

Wigton mayor Mike Bryceson said he’d casted his vote online.

"It was pretty easy to do and only took a minute," he added.

"The council is pleased to support Chrysalis and I hope everyone in Wigton and the surrounding area votes for them."

Nelson Thomlinson School held a competition inviting pupils to design the garden.
