Leading Cumbrian councillors have backed a major transport body that will focus on improving links across the north of England.
Stewart Young, Cumbria County Council leader, said once in place, Transport of the North (TfN) will be key in pushing forward vital schemes to connect the west coast of Cumbria and the north east.
However the Labour councillor has accused the Government of delaying progress by dragging its heels on the legislation.
The council cabinet had hoped to formally sign up to TfN yesterday, but Mr Young said national regulations have yet to be finalised.
Members gave their backing in principle, agreeing to join once these are in place.
Mr Young said: "Transport for the North will have a major influence on transport investment in the north of England, so we have made sure Cumbria has had a strong voice at the table.
"We will keep lobbying the Government to stop the delays and to provide the investment Cumbria needs.”
