Safer Internet Day 2018 takes place on Tuesday, February 6.

North Lakes School in Penrith will be among those taking part in the global initiative with activities for children to enjoy technology safely.

The school is already a champion of digital innovation and safety.

Last October it won the Best Use of Technology category at the 2017 Golden Apple Awards, Cumbria's education and skills 'Oscars' staged by CN Group.

Childnet.com has tips for parents concerned about online safety including:

* Encourage your child to talk about their internet use: for example who they’re talking to, services they’re using.

* Give your child ways to deal with online content that they are not comfortable with - eg: turning off the screen, telling a trusted adult.

* Use filtering software to block unwanted content.

* Encourage children to ‘think before you post.’ Content posted privately online can be publicly shared by others, and may remain online forever.

* Familiarise yourself with privacy settings and reporting features.
