A 17th century coaching inn in north Cumbria has been put on the market, with a near £700,000 price tag.

The String of Horses at Faugh, near Brampton, has been put up for sale by owners Colin and Jill Ramsay, who have run it for nearly a decade.

It is being sold freehold by leisure property specialists Fleurets on their behalf, with a guide price of £695,000.

The historic inn dates back to 1659 and has been welcoming guests for more than 350 years.

The String of Horses takes its name from its original use because travelling merchants would stop to rest as well as harness a new string of horses to the stagecoach.

It has a bar, restaurant, which can seat about 60 people, and 11 en-suite letting rooms as well as a three-bedroom owners' accommodation.

There are historic oak beams and panelling as well as an open fire and brassware throughout the property.

Lesley Watmough, of Fleurets who is marketing the property, said: "Colin Ramsay purchased the business nine years ago."

Mr Ramsay does not open at lunchtimes but the business operates between 6pm and 11pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

Turnover has steadily grown in recent years, with the owners reporting £244,000, £243,000 and £255,000 in the last three years.
