The trust that runs Wigton's swimming pool has received a huge donation from the manufacturers of the new plastic £5 banknote.

Wigton-based Innovia Security, which makes the polymer for the new notes, has made a £10,000 donation to Wigton Baths Trust.

News of the cash injection will be music to the ears of the trust volunteers and pool staff who work tirelessly to keep the vital facility, in the Stony Banks area of Wigton, open.

A spokesman for the trust said: "We want to say a massive thank you to Innovia Security.

"The trust and staff are extremely grateful and we wanted to share this amazing news with you all."

The pool was on the verge of closing for good in 2013, when it was shut by Cumbria County Council after being pinpointed as the possible source of a pollution leak.

Following cuts to local government budgets it soon appeared that the facility would never reopen.

However, determined townsfolk launched a spirited campaign to save it from permanent closure and set up the Wigton Baths Trust to take it over.

After months of negotiations they officially gained control in March last year - and it welcomed its first customers the following month.

It relies upon a series of grants, donations like the one from Innovia and generating its own income to stay afloat.
