A grand total of 29,312 pom poms ensured hospice supporters smashed a world record in Carlisle last night.

The attempt - for the longest line of pom poms - was organsied by the Eden Valley Hospice as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations.

The Guinness World Record stood at 7,000, but the Carlisle effort went far beyond that - four times more, in fact.

For months hospice supporters have been making pom poms to help get the hospice in the record book.

The next step was to lay them all out in a giant line, which took place in The Lanes Shopping Centre last night.

The attempt went on late into the evening, with hospice chief executive Bill Mumford eventually tweeting: "29,312!!!!!!!! Fantastic. Thank you to all. Wonderful."

Volunteers, watched by independent verifiers, helped count the pom poms as they lined them up.

The attempt was filmed so it can be verified. A formal Guinness World Record is expected to be declared later in the year.
