The housing boom on Carlisle’s eastern boundary is set to continue after plans for a further 150 homes were approved by the city council.

Kingstown-based North Associates submitted plans last year to develop 12 acres of land off Moorside Drive and Valley Drive in Harraby.

A decision to approve the plans comes shortly after the council also gave the go-ahead to proposals submitted by Taylor Wimpey to build 189 homes on land next to the Carleton Clinic, east of Cumwhinton Road.

Earlier this year the city council and Cumbria County Council secured £250,000 to gather evidence for the Carlisle South masterplan, which suggests up to 10,000 new homes as well as a bypass linking the M6 and A595.

As was the case with the Taylor Wimpey development, the plans submitted by North Associates have also been met with opposition from those living nearby.

Maureen Beattie, a resident of Moorside Drive, said: “Moorside Drive is a narrow road with open plan gardens for children to play safely of which present residents are aware.

"Cars are parked on the road with vehicles able to pass now and with the increase of at least another 200 cars plus construction traffic it poses great concern for all who live in Moorside/Valley Drive.”

Jonny Birdsall, a father-of-two who lives on Huntsman Lane, also wrote to the city council to object to the plans.

He said: “This road struggles to handle the current volume of traffic with the current number of houses and will not be able to cope.”

Mr Birdsall added that he moved to the area as he believed it to be a safe place for his two young children.

He added: “The estate has a high population of children and adding this development would mean there would be an accident waiting to happen.”

John Blue, of North Associates, said: “We believe that the development will see an increase in cash flow to the area and will help surrounding businesses.

“With regards to traffic, there will be plans in place which we will need to adhere to as part of the section 106 agreement.”
