Carlisle United chiefs hope Rod Stewart will lead a trail of stars towards Brunton Park.

The singing superstar this week announced a huge gig at the football ground next summer, bringing thousands of his fans to the city.

Blues bosses hope that, as well as bringing a big cash boost to the city, the concert will make other big-name performers and promoters realise the stadium’s potential

Tickets for the show go on general sale at 9am today, (FRI) but hundreds have already been snapped up during a pre-sale, which started on Wednesday, and through fan clubs.

A number have already been touted online, with prices reaching in excess of £360 for floor seats.

Speaking about his 2016 tour Rod said: “Performing under the stars for my British friends and fans next June will be a fun party because let’s face it the home crowd bring out the best in me.

“Together, we’ll make sure there will be some special memories.”

United themselves told The Cumberland News it sold out of one entire package of hospitality tickets within hours of going on sale, with others still available.

Show promoters Cuffe and Taylor said there has been a “phenomenal” demand for pre-sale tickets.

The club’s sales and marketing director Phil King said United hoped the gig would showcase the stadium for similar events in the future.

“We can get used to how it works again and take a few lessons from it,” he explained.

“It’s something we’re looking to push forward with over the coming years too. From then on we would be actively trying to get some acts here and make it a year-on-year event.”

However, Mr King said that the Maggie May singer’s gig will likely be the only concert held at Brunton Park in 2016.

“It’s a great venture from our point of view,” he continued, “as it shows off Brunton Park as a venue for concerts following on from Elton John who was here eight years ago.

“It’s good to be able to welcome a big name artist like Rod Stewart.

“He has a wide appeal and has sold out a lot of big gigs. We’re excited about how popular it’s going to be.”

The general sale begins at 9am, with tickets available from www.ticketline.co.uk

A limited number will also be sold through the club’s ticket office.
