Residents of a Cumbrian town hope its selection as one of England’s first Heritage Action Zones will bring a much-needed economic boost.

Appleby will receive about £1.6 million over the next five years – an investment locals hope will rally the town’s fortunes after visitor numbers declined in recent years.

The town is one of 10 to be chosen as a HAZ.

The HAZ project is driven by Historic England, which is working with Eden council, Appleby Town Council and other locals.

Appleby mayor John Pape said: “We are over the moon that Appleby has been chosen. The heritage of the town is key to attracting tourism and is therefore a vital factor in supporting the local economy.”

The overall investment over five years is estimated to be £1,650,000, with Historic England contributing around £760,000.

The HAZ scheme will involve heritage open days and projects with local schools to help restore the town’s conservation and public areas.

Catherine Dewar, planning director North West for Historic England, said: “Appleby is a fascinating historic market town and we’re thrilled to be working in partnership with others who live and work in the town.”
