The midday assistant at Houghton School admits it will be tough to leave, but is looking forward to spending time with her husband.
Mrs Fisher, 58, said: “My children were at Houghton School and I just happened to be going and picking them up when someone said there was a job going as a midday supervisor.
"I applied and my children grew up and moved on but I stayed.
“I enjoy being with the children and playing with them. I enjoy their company.
“I’ve watched so many grow up and leave and go on to be hairdressers and plumbers or go to university.”
Mrs Fisher also works at Houghton Store – another job she will be officially leaving today – and says she loves it when former pupils come in and say hello.
“They always say ‘hello Mrs Fisher’, and ask if I’m still there,” she recalled. “There have been some surprises over the years, but the biggest surprise is a girl who is still a pupil. She wants to be a chef and is really good at baking – I was just so surprised that she said it, but she will be very good.”
Despite more than two decades at the village school, Mrs Fisher insists little has changed – either in the school or her role.
She added: “Everyone has been lovely and kind and I know I will miss everyone.
“I don’t think it will hit me until I walk out of the door for the last time.”
Headteacher Lindsey Burnie said: “Carole is the longest-serving member of staff in the school at present.
“She’s been a valued member of our school and she will be remembered by many staff and children.
“Carole is a part of the school fabric and it will very difficult to fill her boots.”
