Terrified supermarket staff were later sprayed with an unknown liquid after coming across three thieves as they fled the city’s Rosehill branch.
The gang broke into a safe before stealing more than £1,000 cash in the raid on Wednesday night.
Detectives issued the CCTV footage as the hunt continued for the robbers today.
The footage shows in shocking details two of the robbers – their faces covered by makeshift cloth masks – using what appear to be crowbars to get at the cash and rifling through an office.
The two male employees sprayed by the gang were not harmed but left “shaken and fearful” by their harrowing ordeal.
The raiders later fled in a black getaway car. Nobody was injured.
The robbers got into the building through the back door at about 11pm.
Police stressed this sort of crime was rare in Carlisle and Cumbria.
Officers are urging anyone who was nearby and saw anyone acting suspiciously or spotted any suspicious black vehicles to come forward.
If you can help identify the men – or have any information about the raid - contact Carlisle CID on 0845 3300247 or report information anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
