A splash of colour

In a riot of colour, our Me models turned heads in Carlisle city centre on the day of our shoot.
Parting the workday grey-clad lunchtime crowds on English Street, the girls got shoppers talking and made a splash on the streets proving there’s still time to take your pick of rainbow brights before the autumn/winter collections hit the shops.
Leave monochrome for chiller months and be brave with fuschia, yellows and cobalt blues.
If a holiday is still on your horizon, beat the beach panic with a maxi dress. Chic for daytime and glam for night, the maxi is a strong trend this season. It’s also a fabulous fallback if a neglected bikini body regime means hotpants or a mini dress bring you out in goosebumps.
For those that can, do a playsuit. The rails are teeming with cute little styles fit for a spot of sightseeing, like the floral number worn by Jade, or the hot pink beach suit modelled by Nikki.
Love ’em or loathe ’em, harem pants just won’t go away this season. Dress them down in a casual beach to bar style like the green jumpsuit worn by Debbie. Pile on the ethnic jewellery and pair with heels for knocking back cocktails by night.
If utility’s more your style, keep the look on the fashionable side of GI Jane by steering clear of silver and piling on bright necklaces to add a splash of colour like Me model Jenny.
Wearing colour well is all about assessing your skintone. Pale and interesting types should, as a general rule of thumb, steer clear of acid brights. Head for more muted tones or splashes of colour by layering vests or contrasting colour detail with belts, bags or bangles.
Me model Debbie’s olive skin tone, dark locks rocks the ‘so yellow it stings’ dress we set off with simple black accessories.
To be colour clever, use brights to enhance your best features. To avoid beauty pageant frock horrors, steer clear of bright satins too.
But one of the most maddening aspects of fashion is that often the most stylish people break every rule in the book – so be brave, unleash your bold side and go for what brightens your style.

- Models Debbie Ingram, Jenny Brown, Jade Chapman and Nikki Little had a ball on our summer fashion shoot, causing a stir in Carlisle city centre.
Student and professional model Debbie, 19, from Appleby, is hoping to model professionally for Next after getting through to the finals of a national competition for the high street retailer.
Fellow in-demand model Nikki Little, 18, of Wetheral, was more than at home with our floral theme – in between modelling assignments for studios and companies nationwide she’s studying floristry at Newton Rigg.
Architectural technology student and newly-wed Jade, 21, nee Hall, was fresh from her honeymoon after marrying husband James. Me loved looking through her wedding photographs of the reception at the Heatherglen Hotel.
Jenny, 21, of Brampton, is a film and television graduate from Northumbria University. After three years of hard work, Jenny is working at the Duke of Cumberland pub in Castle Carrock while she figures out how to take the media world by storm.
To ensure the girls turned heads in the town centre, stylists from Velvet 7 salon on Cecil Street created beachy, tousled styles for our models to reflect the relaxed summer feel.
Hair was by Rachel Jardine, Craig Muirhead, Stephanie Alford and Natalie Higgins.
