Maid to measure

Bridesmaids are usually a member of the bride’s family or a close friend of the bride but if the groom has a sister or a close female relative then you could include her.

Bridesmaids are meant to be unmarried so if a married woman is chosen as the chief bridesmaid then she is often given the title of matron of honour.

Traditionally the bride chooses the dresses for her bridesmaids and their outfits can depend on many things.

Firstly, the bride should think about what she is wearing and how the dresses of the bridesmaids can mirror her outfit in style.

It may be that your bridesmaids are different ages, shapes and sizes and so choosing a style and colour that suits everyone may not be easy. Instead of choosing identical outfits in style and colour you could opt for the same coloured outfits but in different styles or different colours in the same style to cater for everyone.

Your choice of colour could be based on your favourite colour or to fit in with a particular colour scheme you have chosen as a theme for your wedding day.

Younger bridesmaids, or flower girls, may wear a different outfit from the other bridesmaids. Whatever you decide, remember that younger girls will grow quickly so don’t get anything too early.

It is usual for the modern bride or her family to pay for the bridesmaids’ outfits.

It is usually the responsibility of the chief bridesmaid or matron of honour to organise the hen party and she should discuss the type of celebration with the bride-to-be beforehand.

The chief bridesmaid should take charge of the other bridesmaids. She should offer support in the run up to the wedding and on the day itself and on the day she should make sure that everyone is in the right place at the right time and has the correct outfit and accessories.

The bridesmaids usually get dressed at the same location as the bride and the bridesmaids will probably travel to the venue with the bride’s mother.

When the bride arrives at the venue the chief bridesmaid should make sure that all the attendants are in their correct place behind her, ready to make an entrance. She should also help to make final adjustments to the bride’s outfits. Once the bride arrives next to the groom, the chief bridesmaid should take her bouquet and look after it during the ceremony.

The bridesmaids usually sit down at the front during the ceremony.

On leaving the ceremony venue, the chief bridesmaid and the best man walk together behind the bride and groom. Other bridesmaids will be escorted by the ushers and then the young bridesmaids and pageboys will follow behind them.

At the reception, it is traditional for the chief bridesmaid to take to the floor with the best man towards the end of the bride and groom’s first dance.
