Beauty is in nature
The stage is set for the annual switch-on of Cockermouth’s Christmas lights on Sunday, and what a difference a tree makes.

You can’t punish all drinkers
CAN it really be true that we as a nation are so supine and brainwashed by the medical neo-puritans that it was impossible to find someone to contribute to the Talking Point article (News & Star, Wednesday, October 2) on minimum alcohol pricing that thought it a bad idea?

No freedom of choice
IT seems almost perversely ironic that the very week leading up to the day we remember the millions who gave their lives in the defence of freedom, and the freedom to make our own decisions, we had a Labour party member demanding that a future Labour government pass a law to make everybody have their pay and conditions agreed by a union, (News & Star, November 8 ).

Having read Steph Johnson’s article (News & Star, September 12) regarding the proposed move of Fire Control from Cockermouth to Warrington, a number of questions need to be answered.

I found school bi-plane
In 1957 when I was a lad of 12, I attended the Nelson Thomlinson School in Wigton, where myself and my chum Geoffrey Harrison, from Raughton Head, discovered the fuselage and wings of a bi-plane in the loft of the building next to the caretaker’s house.

Why it’s a (clean) dog’s life
Many of us, myself included, are often quick to criticise today’s youth but on my train into Carlisle recently there was a young lady with two lovely Siberian huskies lying beside her on the floor.

And Labour’s alternative is?
COPELAND MP Jamie Reed is absolutely right to be critical of the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Cumbria, along with the claims that the county is leading the country in NHS reforms (News & Star, Monday). I WAS very disappointed to read Dr Calvert’s negative views about the potential advantages of offering men a routine blood test for the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) level (News & Star, August 4).WHATEVER your views on the EU, when we voted to stay in the Common Market 36 years ago, we thought we were voting for a Free Trade agreement.

Put your house in order
Following the unprecedented rioting and violence in London and other English cities, I watched a TV programme which posed the question: “What steps can be taken to convert today’s out-of-control teenagers into responsible law-abiding adults?”
