Five-goal hero Burrows buries spirited Penrith

Jake Burrows’ five-goal demolition proved too much for a young, yet talented Penrith AFC A side.

It must be mentioned that the confidence and hunger of Penrith shone throughout the game, with players constantly dribbling and defending.

After only 30 seconds, Burrows made a name for himself.

Turning well, he powered an effort into the bottom corner to give the home side an early lead. Less than a minute later, Burrows strook the post.

In response, Penrith’s striker Luke Hunter dribbling and attacking flair was winning numerous corners.

However, chances were not being taken and dangerman Burrows gave Penrith a lesson in finishing with an outstretched toe-poke past the rushing Harry Hunter in goal.

With a two-goal lead, many would have written Penrith.

A five-minute comeback proved that the young side were not here just to make up the numbers.

Penrith’s first ever goal in competitive football came from Dylan Cowperthwaite.

Receiving the ball back from a tame corner, Cowperthwaite charged at Langwathby’s front-post and unleashed a thunderous effort which flew past ‘keeper Joe Mein and Rhys McKie on the goal-line.

Before half-time, Luke Hunter’s neat finish from a tight angle equalled the teams at 2-2.

As with the first-half, Burrows scored early on after the interval.

Cutting in from the left, Burrows caught Hunter napping and shot through his legs to put Langwathby back in the lead.

To get themselves back in the game, Penrith’s manager Ben Williamson changed to four in midfield to give more of a fight in the middle of the park.

Poppy Scholefield, too, was thrown on in defence and for large parts of the second-half, stood her ground and kept Langwathby at bay.

A counter-attack though, outnumbered Scholefield. And Burrows stroked his and Langwathby’s fourth into the net.

The difference between the two sides seemed to be the superiour finishing of Langwathby. Although Penrith created plentiful, converting the chances proved difficult.

Saying this, Penrith’s third goal was simply masterclass.

Starting with ‘keeper Hunter, two splitting passes between defence and attack allowed the outstanding Hunter to finish precisely.

It was Burrows though who stole the limelight, finishing well in the closing stages of the game to give his side victory.
