Vintage themes still the order of the day at Cumbrian weddings

While a lot of new styles started to come through in 2011 there are some new twists to these in 2012, especially in bridalwear.
Brides are still looking for something different and want to bring their personality to their wedding day in some way.
Vintage themes were big news in 2011 and will continue to be popular in 2012 and will influence everything from the bridal gown to flowers and table decorations.
The strapless dress has been big news for brides for some years now but this is starting to change as more designs are appearing that give the bride a bit more coverage.
Dresses that give the illusion of a strapless dress but give the bride more coverage will be hot this season.
Look out for some beautiful designs that have a delicate layer of fabric covering the area above the neckline of what would be a strapless dress.
Dresses with some type of sleeves will also be popular.
If you want the best of both, then a great idea is the inner jacket which can be taken off during the day, allowing the bride to have two looks, a strapless and one with sleeves.
Lace will also be big this year, whether it’s a full lace dress or a dress that has a hint of lace, it gives a timeless and sophisticated look.
While more dresses are more covered around the shoulders, there’s a new trend for open back gowns. Not all brides will feel comfortable revealing so much of their back, an area that is likely to be on show during the ceremony, but these styles are certainly eye-catching, giving a sexy, yet classy look.
“A lot of girls are looking for lace and this was happening before the royal wedding,” says Carol Roberts of Carol Roberts Couture Bridal, Carlisle. “White isn’t in. Ivory, deep ivory and golds are popular.
“If brides do go for a strapless dress then they are looking for a jacket to go with it.”
For the bride who loves glamour and shoes, a short 1950s style dress is perfect.
“They are all about the glamour and the shoes,” says Carol. “It’s definitely a style for brides who love shoes and some spend almost as much on the shoes as the dress.”
Louise Higham of Bridal House, Maryport, agrees that ivory continues to be a popular colour for bridal gowns.
“Ivory remains the main colour and champagne is also popular and fits in with the vintage style that remains popular,” she says. “A lot of brides want to wear something that is quite classic rather than making a fashion statement so when they look back at their wedding photographs they don’t ask themselves why they wore it.
“They do want to put a twist to the classic look though to make it individual.”
When it comes to outfits for bridesmaids, dresses that can be worn again are top of the agenda but this doesn’t mean compromising on style or glamour.
Vintage inspired colours such as sage green and soft paler colours such as purples and vintage rose are hot colours for the season while traditional colours such as claret will always be popular classic bridesmaid colours.
While tiaras are the traditional headwear for a bride there is now more choice and so flower or pearl combs, headbands and silk or real flowers all make stunning choices, especially if your bridal gown has a country or vintage look.
A flower comb or a side headpiece are stunning alternatives to a tiara.
Brides are continuing to look for something different and a new trend from America is set to hit wedding favours and cakes.
Mini pops are bite size pieces of chocolate cake on sticks coated in a type of vanilla candy and come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are ideal for wedding favours or even as an addition or alternative to a wedding cake.
“They’re all the rage in London and they’re gradually filtering their way up the country as people realise it’s more then just a fad,” says Charlotte Shepherd, who runs Lulabelle Bakes in Carlisle. “Cake pops are great as wedding favours as they are versatile and fun and can be personalised for any couples specific needs.
“They can also be taken home by the guests and enjoyed later on.
“Some people use them as an alternative to having several tiers of cake, so the main wedding cake is surrounded by the pops on a stand and the guests help themselves.
“Or they can be used as an edible table decoration by placing a bunch of pops in the centre of each table in a vase.”
Choosing cheese for your wedding cake is something that has started to take off over the last few years and it’s likely to become even more popular, as brides look for something more unusual.
Just like a traditional wedding cake, they can be tiered and customised using flowers, fruit and ribbon.
Hand-tied bouquets are a simple alternative to the traditional wired bouquets and have become the choice of many brides in recent years.
Vintage inspired bouquets of soft colours are perfect to match the vintage style bridal dress and colours of bridesmaid dresses while using wildflowers can give a back to nature feel.
Adding herbs to your bouquet is a way of adding a lovely scent to your bouquets in 2012. Lavender, rosemary, mint and basil are all options so speak to your florist to see how they can be incorporated into your bouquet in 2012.
