Young farmers in Cumbria enjoy 75th anniversary
Last updated at 14:37, Friday, 12 October 2012
It was a night of friendships rekindled as 500 former and present young farmers gathered to celebrate 75 years of the county federation.
The Cumbria Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs has educated and entertained thousands of youngsters, forging lifelong friendships and even marriages in that time.
Those gathered in a marquee at the Garden at Eden at Crosby-on-Eden on Saturday night were aged from 19 to 90.
Olive Clarke is the longest-serving member who was Westmorland chairman in 1959, Westmorland president in 1967 and Cumbria president in 1980. She said grace before dinner.
The 1968 county chairman, Ian Watson, reminisced about his time in young farmers during an after-dinner speech. The former national chairman said he still gets much use from the public speaking skills he learned as a young farmer.
Current chairman Jan Mason and president Nick Utting cut a cake to mark the special anniversary.
