Honour: Prince Charles presents the Blamire medal to Hazel and Joe Relph during his visit to Yew Tree Farm, Rosthwaite last week

The Prince of Wales agreed to present the Blamire medal, which recognises the Relphs’ promotion of Herdwick lamb on their Borrowdale valley hill farm.

Yew Tree Farm at Rosthwaite, near Keswick, has provided the Prince with a bed for the night on many of his visits to the county and it is said to be his favourite B&B.

The couple have become his friends and were even invited to his wedding.

The prestigious Blamire award is presented annually to those who excel in the field of agriculture and in its associated industries.

Michael Cowen, chairman of the Blamire Trust, said: “Joe and Hazel are typical of hard-working farmers in our Lake District, and have shown how rewarding hill farming can be.

“Their activities are a credit to them, which include the superb facilities for visitors and their highly successful marketing of Herdwick lamb.”

He added: “Our trust is honoured that His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has agreed to present this medal during his visit.”

Mrs Relph said: “We were shocked and surprised to hear we would be awarded the medal.

“It makes it extra special that the Prince presented it to us. He has the same feelings as us about countryside and farming matters.”
