Limousin bull Truman Jagger became a worldwide record breaker when he went under the hammer in Carlisle.

The young bull showed he had the moves when he smashed the previous world record for the breed, selling for a staggering 140,000 gns (£147,000).

Watchers at a hushed ringside held their breaths on Saturday as bidding overtook the previous world record price of 125,000 gns paid for a Limousin heifer, owned by a Lockerbie breeder. The unfazed 18-month-old bull broke the UK and European price record for a bovine animal, as well as the Limousin world record.

Owned by Henry Savage & Sons of County Down, Northern Ireland, the bull sold in a five-way split.

One of the lucky owners is Penrith breeder Allan Jenkinson – who is no stranger to paying huge sums for his Limousins.

In 2012 Mr Jenkinson paid 120,000 gns for the prized bull Dolcorsllwyn Fabio, to add to his expanding award-winning Limousin herd at Whinfell Park.

The day before the sale, Jagger won intermediate and supreme champion.

Heather Pritchard, of Harrison & Hetherington who organised the sale, said: “He was an outstanding bull who was greatly admired by many breeders.

“It was rumoured he was a bull who was going to be a star, even before the show and sale.

“We knew he would fetch a good price but even still, it was unbelievable.”

Jagger is the first son of the cow Truman Grazia to be sold at auction. She was champion of the Northern Ireland heifer derby in 2011, reserve overall at Balmoral Show the same year and champion at the Red Ladies Derby in Carlisle, before being sold for 14,000 gns.

Jagger is overall champion and reserve overall champion and junior interbreed champion at Balmoral Show this year.

The four other new owners are Mike and Melanie Alford of Devon, Paul Davies of Hereford, Messrs Lee and Lloyd of Dyfed, Wales, and Kedzlie Farms Ltd of Galashiels.
