A trio of young farmers are setting out their stalls to help shape the look of the countryside.

They have each started working with Carlisle-based H&H Land and Property as part of degree courses.

And they hope to gain experience that will help them influence how the county’s rural economy grows.

Millie Etheridge, Sarah Kidd and Jonathan Hird, all aged 20, are students at Harper Adams University in Shropshire.

Their work with the land agency will allow them to put the theory they’ve been taught in the classroom into practice in the field.

It’s work that an executive with the firm believes will benefit both sides.

Commercial director Peter Hull said: “Offering students the opportunity to learn and develop in the field is an important part of the philosophy of H&H.

“We consider ourselves very fortunate to have attracted very able and talented students this year.”

He said the students, each studying for BSc in rural enterprise and land management, caught their eye because of their “excellent graduate prospects”.

All of the students are from north Cumbria.

Millie, from Irthington, says she’s “delighted” by her appointment, allowing her to further her interest in the rural economy. She has a keen interest in showing horses and eventing, and is also a member of Brampton YFC.

Having been brought up on a farm, Sarah is well versed in the practicalities of farming life, actively helping out with the workload on the family’s beef and sheep farm.

She is a keen sportswoman who enjoys playing hockey and running, in addition to being a member of Skelton YFC.

Jonathan is also from a farming family and involved with helping out on his father’s beef and sheep farm. He is an active member of Caldbeck YFC, where he holds the position of vice-chairman and assistant treasurer.

Mr Hull added: “We will offer Millie, Sarah and Jonathan every encouragement, providing them with the knowledge and skills they will need to support them through their placement year.
