Extra police officers drafted in for Carlisle Utd and Leeds cup match

Hooligans causing trouble as Carlisle United take on Leeds tonight could face moves to ban them from football grounds – even if they don’t set foot in Brunton Park.

Police chiefs say they will pursue soccer banning orders “as far as the law will allow” through the courts for anyone convicted of any disorder linked to the big cup clash.

They add this could apply to troublemakers who do not go near United’s ground but cause problems on the streets or in city pubs.

The lucrative cup decider is being screened live on Sky television and police say they are aware large numbers may watch the game from bars in and around the city centre.

They add that extra officers will be on patrol in Carlisle tonight as the Blues aim to book a cash-spinning place in the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Carlisle lead 2-1 going into the second leg of the competition’s Northern final.

The winner over the two legs will clinch a place in the final at Wembley on Sunday, March 28.

Chief Inspector Mark Pannone said officers were not expecting disorder but extra bobbies would be on patrol due to the nature of the match.

“It is a high-profile game and we want everyone to enjoy the game – but we will not tolerate any football-related disorder,” he told the News & Star.

“We urge anyone going to or watching the game to conduct themselves appropriately.

“We will follow through the courts anyone who is found responsible for football-related disorder.”

He added: “If the law allows us we will progress football banning orders for anyone involved.”

Football banning orders can bar convicted offenders from soccer stadiums. They are made by the courts following applications from police.

A number of arrests have been made following trouble surrounding games between the two clubs over the last few years.

Chief Insp Pannone added: “We want to make sure we support the club so this can be an enjoyable experience for everyone.”

The game kicks off at 7pm tonight, but no tickets will be sold after 2pm.
