Ellenborough return to top of under-14 league

Ellenborough Rangers returned to the top of the Under-14 league table after completing the double over Wath Brow Hornets, with a 24-4 win at the Brow.

Karl Makepeace, Conner Wilson, Reece Clarke, Hayden Mostyn and Bradley Lawrence were credited with the touchdowns for the Rangers and Makepeace also chipped in with two goals.

M’Port/Seaton moved up into a play off place after their 20-10 home win over local rivals Glasson Rangers.

Aaron Bell crossing for a hat trick of tries and Karl Steele added a fourth. Callum Denver added two conversions.

In the only Under-16 fixture to beat the weather, Kells narrowly edged the win in their encounter with Egremont Rangers in the 14-4 scoreline.

Egremont had the better of the first half with loose forward Leon Crellin, scrum-half Lewis Beckwith and centre Joshua Kelly always at the forefront when the Rangers were looking for leaders in attack and defence.

The visitors did well in keeping the score at 0-0 at the break as Kells were playing with the advantage of the wind at their backs.

They always looked dangerous when loose forward Martin O’Neil, second-rower Jackson Clarke and stand-off Jamie Doran had ball in hand.

Egremont were first to break the deadlock as early as the first minute of the second period as Crellin scooped the ball up from the base of the scrum to score wide out for 4-0.

Kells thought they had levelled three minutes later when Doran made a great break up the field, drew the advancing full back before feeding centre Ryan Watson only to be pulled back for a dubious forward pass decision by the match official.

Three minutes later, Doran created another scoring chance for Kells only to see his pass go to ground from a knock off with the line begging.

The home side finally drew level after nine minutes play when after good hands by Doran and O’Neil resulted in second rower Clarke going over in the corner.

Kells hit the front after 20 minutes when after a good cross field passing move, winger Dylan Hudson touched down in the corner to lead 8-4.

And Kells finally put the game out of gallant Egremont’s reach on the 26 minute mark as Doran put in a clever chip over the Egremont defensive line and full back Reece O’Neil was quickest to react and touch down under the posts. Centre Watson tagged on the extras to give Kells a 14-4 victory.

Star performers for Kells in the second half, and who contributed greatly towards the team getting the hard fought win were the Smith twins, prop forward Andrew and brother Stephen playing at hooker, as they constantly made great yards forward time and time again getting their team out of trouble and putting them in scoring chances on many occasion.
