Edmondsons lead the way in Yetton Trophy victory

Cumbria IBC Ladies were in action in the Yetton Trophy last week and proved to be in good form when beating neighbours Copeland by 42 shots.
Cumbria took an early lead and from halfway there was never any real doubt as to the ultimate result, despite spirited resistance from the Cleator club.
At Carlisle Cindy Edmondson was 24-16 too strong for B Brown and Karen Edmondson won 29-15 against Noreen Fleet. At Cleator Janice Gower beat Beatrice Ross 25-14 and Eleanor Gass completed the victory when overcoming Matty Ritson 24-15.
Over 60 Double Rink: Cumbria IBC met Concordia IBC last Friday and moved into the last 32 in England when achieving a seven-shot victory over the north east side.
At Carlisle, John Bell’s four started slowly but gradually eased into the lead and battled well throughout to beat W Pym 21-16.
At Cramlington, Joe Menzies’ four produced a good performance and always just had the upper hand against the redoubtable Colin Cairns on his own green. In the end they won by two and, though the margin was small, this was a good win.
In the next round Cumbria will face Newcastle Eldon Square, who put paid to Cumbria B’s hopes earlier this season.
Denny Cup: After the major disappointment of defeat in the Liberty Trophy last week, the match against Blackpool Newton Hall looked like being a rather stern test of character but the Carlisle side showed no evidence of a hangover from that defeat when easily disposing of the Lancashire Club by no less than 49 shots.
Cumbrians are not unused to winning margins in this area but against a more than useful side this was a really good performance, which once again augurs well for the future.
At home, Trevor Taylor was again in good form, skipping his players to a 31-10 win over the useful Chris Gale and Stuart Airey skipped his four to a good win over former England skip Noel Burrows.
Not to be outdone, Gavin Taylor found the vagaries of the Blackpool green no problem, beating current international Jason Parkinson by no less than 17 shots, while Stephen Farish ensured a clean sweep for the champions when beating another international Mark Dawes 17-14.
This was an easy win made all the more impressive by the strength of the opposition. Well done Cumbria.
In the next round, Cumbria will face Nottingham and this should be another good test. Despite the new rules which have been implemented both sides have agreed to play home and away, which is, of course, good for both sets of supporters, who should enjoy the game which takes place on Saturday week at 10am.
National Competitions: In the singles, John Crozier made the early running against Mark Nanson but it was the younger man who finished the game off better.
Crozier led 12-8 two thirds of the way through but in the next seven ends Nanson went on a scoring run, which saw him pick up thirteen shots without reply. In the Senior Singles new member Ray Gall came up against Roger McGhie but proved well up to the task leading 11-8 and, as in the previous game, scoring a further 10 shots without a single reply.
In the Senior Triples, David Taylor, Anthony Little and David McManus took care of Joe Menzies comfortably while in the Senior fours John Bell also won comfortably after having battled to stay in the game in the early stages against Joe Menzies.
In the two mixed pairs ties played, Cindy Edmondson and Rick Gallagher went through comfortably against Rae Graham and Janice Gower and it was a similar story as Eleanor Gass and Gavin Taylor accounted for David Sparrow and Jackie Bewley.
Over 60 Inter County League: These games are normally played three at home and away simultaneously but Lancashire were not able to offer the required dates and it was therefore agreed that the away leg be played at Blackpool on Monday and the home leg will be played at Carlisle today at noon. The away fours did well on Monday when winning on two of the three rinks and winning the venue overall by seven shots, giving Cumbria a total of eight points to two. David McManus came from behind to beat David Beacham 20-12, Joe Menzies led virtually throughout to beat Alan Mayne 18-12, while Ray Gall did well to lose by just seven against Charlie Cowsill.
There will be a further 10 points at stake in the game at Carlisle today, as well as an extra six points for the overall aggregate from both venues. Hopefully the Cumbria team will take the vast majority of the points available, a result which would put the team in a strong position for the final group game against Durham on January 7.
Junior Internationals: Good news for two Cumbrians after the Junior Trial as both Kevin Harrison and Danny May have been selected to represent England in the BIIBC Series in Ballymoney on January 9/10. May has been selected to skip while Harrison will lead.
Under 25 Singles: Danny May, a former winner of this event, made the trip to Melton at the weekend for the final stages but failed to produce his best and went down 2-0 to Junior triallist Luke Allway, of St Neots, in round one.
Danny has not been producing his best in recent weeks and has decided to rest for a while. Top players do experience periods such as this and normally play their way through them.
Under 25 Inter Club Double Rink: Cumbria IBC’s Juniors will be in action on Saturday at lunch time when taking on Hartlepool.
Kevin Harrison, Ryan Baxter, Mark Irwin and Stephen Green will play at home while Jonathon Fieldhouse, Lewis Parker, Gary Robertson and Martin Rice will make the trip across to the north east.
Egham Trophy: On Sunday the next round of the Inter Club Mixed takes place when Cumbria IBC meet York in the Egham Trophy at noon.
Champion of Champions: Due to printing problems in area two, the zone final of the Champion of Champions has been delayed but will now take place at Hexham on Saturday at 2pm. Eden IBC’s John Baird will be representing this area and we wish him well.
