Dylan Farish man of match as Kingstown United beat Carlisle City

Kingstown United beat Carlisle City Whites to record their third win and take their points total into double figures. Both teams were eager to play after a long lay-off brought about by the hard winter.

Kingstown had the better of the first half scoring twice without reply to lead two-nil at half-time. City came out for the second half with all guns blazing but they went further behind when Kingstown scored from a direct free-kick.

The Carlisle City players were determined to score and they pulled the score back to 3-1, shortly after missing a penalty, but the Kingstown defence held firm and they added their fourth goal was the result of a fine individual effort from man of the match Dylan Farish.

The Briar Bank pitch had made a good recovery after the frost and snow and the game was played at a fast pace.

Kingstown made the early running with Dylan Farish linking up with James Etheridge who eventually lost out to a timely tackle from Josh Butler.

Etheridge then found Farish whose accurate pass split the City defence to put Ed Brand in the clear.

The Kingstown striker drew City goalkeeper, Sam Watson, out of his goal before cleverly chipping the ball over him. Brand looked a certain scorer until City defender, Calum Blackett, raced back to clear the ball for a corner.

City came close to taking the lead when Peter Zegveldt made a great run down the left after receiving a pass from Sean Fisher on the half-way line.

Zegveldt sped down the left touchline, passed two defenders, before trying an angled shot which unfortunately travelled wide of the far post.

Kingstown regained the initiative and a Farish throw-in enabled Ed Brand to go round Wayne Lockhart before spoiling his good work by shooting wide from a good position.

The home team forced two corners in quick succession and the second one resulted in Jim Brand shooting wide after Scott Fawkes and Etheridge had worked to provide the opportunity.

Fawkes again set up Jim Brand but Lockhart got in a strong tackle to deny the Kingstown player.

Kingstown took the lead mid-way through the first half when James Armstrong scored from close range.

The move started from a throw on the left which with Fawkes throwing the ball to Etheridge who then returned it to Fawkes who crossed it into the goal area.

Watson managed to get his hands to the ball but it was just too high for him and the ball dropped to Armstrong coming in at the far post and he made no mistake.

There was no let up from Kingstown and they almost scored a second when Farish found Jim Brand in a good position but Watson made a good save before Brand shot wide after the ball ran loose.

Kingstown doubled their lead in the twentieth minute through Farish who seized on a loose ball to score with a brilliant first time shot into the far corner of the net.

Carlisle City came more into the game towards the end of the half and a promising move featuring Niall Keyes and Will Sanderson led to a corner off Ashley Wilson.

Keyes was using the ball well and he again found Sanderson whose low cross was cut out by Jim Litherland in the home goal.

Litherland was again in action when he saved from Sanderson after Keyes had set up the chance. Lockhart found Zegveldt on the left but Nathan Doyle broke up the move and his long ball to Farish enabled the mid-fielder to make ground on the left before shooting narrowly wide.

With half-time fast approaching Watson did exceptionally well to race out of his penalty area to clear the ball from Jim Brand when a third home goal looked likely.

The early stages of the second half were dominated by Carlisle City and Litherland was called into action to make saves from Tom Sendall and Conner Pagen before Jim Brand put Kingstown three goals in the clear.

The move was started when Jim Brand latched onto a long clearance out of defence. Brand was fouled some twenty five yards from goal and he duly picked himself up to score from the resulting free kick.

Despite the unexpected set back the City players played with great determination and they were awarded a penalty when Sendall was brought down by Etheridge.

The spot kick was taken by Lockhart who went for power but he leant back too much and the ball ballooned over the bar. Lockhart partly redeemed himself, moments later, when he raced back to clear the ball off the line when Jim Brand cleverly lobbed it over the advancing Watson.

City were determined to score with Keyes forcing Litherland into a save and the tricky Sendall beat his man before sending over a shot-cum-centre which passed over every one’s head. Sendall was brought down after exchanging passes with Joe Buckley but the resulting free-kick, taken by Russell, passed the wrong side of the post.

Further City pressure resulted in Litherland saving from Keyes after he had swapped passes with Fisher.

Carlisle City were rewarded on the hour mark when a slick right wing move ended with a goal.

Alister Thomson sped up the right wing before dispatching the perfect cross onto the head of Chris Hope whose powerful header was brilliantly saved by Litherland. The ball fell in the six yard box for Hope to quickly seize on and he duly drove it into the net.

Kingstown regained the initiative and a Jim Brand corner was headed wide by Ethridge before Farish completed the scoring with a fine individual goal.

Farish first won the ball on the right touch-line before bursting past his man and shooting home from a difficult angle. Sendall was unlucky when his shot hit the post whilst at the other end Russell made a great clearance to deny Ed Brand when t he forward dribbled his way around Watson.

Kingstown were well served in defence by Jack Cooper, Jonny Atwell, Nathan Doyle, Ashley Wilson and Luke Gate.
