Dirty kitchens or bathrooms are biggest turn-off for buyers

If you’re hoping to sell your home then make sure your kitchen and bathroom are in pristine condition.

Potential buyers rate dirty kitchens and dirty bathrooms as their biggest turn-offs when searching for a property.

These are the discoveries from Rightmove’s Market Intelligence Survey, which has looked into areas of home presentation that sellers need to pay particular attention to in the autumn selling season.

It asked buyers to rank how off-putting they found a range of factors when viewing a property. “Dirty kitchen” and “dirty bathroom” topped the list as the most offensive, by 26 per cent and 28 per cent of respondents respectively.

“Kitchens and bathrooms are two of the most personal and well-used areas of the home,” explains Rightmove director Miles Shipside. “Many potential buyers will try to imagine themselves living in the property during a viewing, and having their senses offended by a lack of cleanliness or hygiene can be a real barrier.

“Cleaning up the kitchen and bathroom to give a sparkling finish can cost far less than other aspects in need of a home makeover.”

The survey found that cleanliness continued to be a priority further down the list, with “dirty internal decoration” ranked as the third biggest buyer deterrent, by 16 per cent of respondents.

Peter Hayward, director of Carlisle estate agents Hayward Tod, says that in the present market good presentation matters more than ever.

“You’ve got to give the buyer confidence and if you give them a good first impression that may well turn into a second viewing and develop into an offer.”

In a buyers’ market, he adds, there is a lot of choice and sellers shouldn’t give a buyer any reason to cross their property off the list.

”People are not looking for projects any more. They want somewhere they can move into. Perhaps living rooms are more consistent, but people want to see bathrooms and kitchens at their absolute best.

“If they get a poor first impression the moment they step into the kitchen they will think: ‘I don’t need to worry about that one any more’.

“Your kitchen doesn’t have to be brand spanking new – there just has to be evidence that you care. If your son is dismantling his motorbike on the kitchen table it won’t give that impression.”
