Did your kids trash park?

WHEN Dalton got a new park it should have been a major boost for the community.

Many areas of Furness, or south and west Cumbria would have looked on with envy at the new playground next to the excellent Dalton Leisure Centre.

It was a community amenity of which to be proud.

How sickening then that vandals and louts have blighted the park.

The latest incident shows the danger of their mindless behaviour.

Any child should be able to play freely and safely in any local park.

But in Dalton an 11-year-old boy cut his stomach open after he fell on broken beer bottles at the play park.

His injuries were so bad a surgeon who operated on him thought he might have been stabbed.

If a baby or toddler had suffered the same injuries it could have been even worse.

Barrow Borough Council, which has responsibility for the park, will investigate the matter.

Police could also increase their patrols in the area.

But in truth the solution lies closer to home

Responsibility for damage and dangerous littering of the play area, lies with the vandals themselves, and with their parents or guardians.

It’s long overdue as a society that we looked at the causes of such issues and dealt with them head-on, than kept having to rely on others to clear up after their selfish acts.
