Councillor wants make-over for Olympic torch route in Carlisle

Carlisle's Warwick Road could get a colourful makeover for the Olympic Torch relay this summer.
Robert Betton, an Independent councillor for Botcherby, is calling on the city council to work with businesses to deck out the torch’s route “with hanging bunting and regalia fit for the occasion”.
The torch passes through Carlisle on Wednesday, June 20, as part of a 70-day tour of 1,000 towns and cities across the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man.
It enters Cumbria at Brough and travels via Appleby and Penrith, arriving in Carlisle at Tesco around 6pm. Twenty torch bearers will pass it on every 300 metres along Warwick Road to Bitts Park.
Mr Betton has tabled a motion for debate by councillors on Tuesday.
It calls on the council to improve the dilapidated fence on the northern side of Warwick Road from the Eastern Way junction to Riverside View.
His motion says: “This fence is in a dangerous, shabby state of repair with protruding spikes. In addition, the area suffers from weeds, litter etc.
“The first thing visitors see travelling along this gateway entry to the city is this eyesore of a fence.”
It adds: “On this once-in-a-lifetime occasion, we would ask that the city council works in partnership with businesses in Durranhill and Botcherby and make a combined effort to deck out the Olympic Torch route with hanging bunting and regalia fit for the occasion.”
Mr Betton is supported by fellow Independent Bill Graham, a former mayor.
The torch will continue to Dumfries before returning through Carlisle the next day on the way to Wigton, Aspatria, Maryport, Workington, Whitehaven, Cockermouth, Keswick, and Bowness-on-Windermere.
As such, Carlisle is the only UK city to be visited by the torch twice.
Fifty community groups have been asked to provide street performances and there will be live entertainment in Bitts Park including a large screen showing the torch’s progress.

Have your say
Who cares about the olympics, if thats all Carlisle will benefit from the millions spent on hosting the olympics, a stupid lit torch being carried down Warwick Road,
big wows, no other investment has come from the olympics being held in this country around here, all the focus and money is on London as usual, and why should that stupid fence or anything else be tarted up for this event, even buying bunting etc, who is going to pay for it, put it up and clean up and take down afterwards, will the council pay for this proposal,or should I say the hard working tax payers. Maybe this councillor should look a bit closer to home, if he wants things cleaned up I think Botherby needs it before Warwick road.
Does this counselor really think we should spend more money on this rich persons get together in London, I think we have already spent to much, when we have a million young people unemployed and its taking Visitors away from Cumbria,at a time we most need them for our income, I think its a disgrace, I ask whats in it for us ? working for nothing filling shelves in some supper market, cutting down on child support
Etc, Etc Get with it Counselor.
