Carlisle Utd manager Greg Abbott admits club faces biggest crisis under him

Greg Abbott today admitted that Carlisle United are facing the biggest crisis of his four-year reign – and says it’s “understandable” that his position is coming under scrutiny.

The under-fire manager insisted he had faith in his ability to turn around the Blues’ desperate home form, but accepted things had reached a new low after the 4-1 hammering against Leyton Orient.

Another Brunton Park collapse against Doncaster tomorrow is now unthinkable for United and Abbott, whose team’s first-half horror show on Saturday saw some angry fans leave the ground before the interval. Some have also called for the head of Abbott, who said: “Over four years we have been in serious situations. Probably this is as serious as it gets.”

Asked if he was aware that some supporters had lost faith in him, he added: “That’s the game. I’m alright with that. It’s understandable. There’s got to be a responsibility for somebody. I’ll probably have nightmares about [Orient’s] fourth goal for evermore. If I lost my job over that I’d be a little bit upset because I don’t think I can do a great deal about that. But I can understand things. I’ve been in the game since I was 14. I know what goes on.”

Abbott described the first-half defensive display – watched by a crowd of just 3,964 – as the worst he has seen in all his years as a player, coach or manager.

But League One’s longest-serving manager suggested that the evidence of his time at the United helm should earn him some patience.

“Over-confidence would be stupid but I turn in day-in, day-out and do my job the best I can,” he said. “And over four years I’ve done it very, very well, without question. The facts are we have had a fantastic four years in terms of improving performances, league positions, cup runs, the revenue we’ve made. At the minute it’s proving very difficult. so maybe we have to do some fiddling and jiggling with the group, because some players at the minute aren’t playing to anywhere near what I think they can be.

“I think we’ve got a good group. We’re not showing that at the moment.”

Abbott also faced criticism for leaving Manchester United loan defender Sean McGinty on the bench for the third straight game.

But he replied: “I don’t think it was fair to expose [McGinty] to that. The two most experienced players [Peter Murphy and Mike Edwards] have 900 appearances between them and you’re asking me to put someone in that would be playing their sixth league game, to deal with a situation that was probably unrepairable. And I don’t think that’s fair on Sean. The last two games had been Peter and Mike’s best two games. Fact.

“But they haven’t defended great in this game.”

Tomorrow’s game will be the last of Joe Garner’s loan but Abbott said he was “hopeful” of striking a new deal with Watford.

Tickets for the FA Cup clash with Bournemouth on December 1 are now on sale. Fans can save £5 by buying them before the day, with an adult pre-sale price of £13.

Have your say

Well as usual Dave as not got a clue what he is talking about. We need to sack Abbot now before it is too late.
