Cumbrian bakery lands huge cake deal with Costa Coffee chain

A Cumbrian village bakery has clinched a colossal contract to supply nearly 35,000 cakes A DAY to Britain’s biggest coffee shop chain.

Bells of Lazonby has created 20 new jobs to fulfil the order, with Costa Coffee, which recently overtook McDonald’s to become the nation’s third biggest food and drink chain.

Bells is now producing more than 30,000 cupcakes and 3,000 large cakes every day for the company at its Lazonby HQ, near Penrith. The treats include rocky road, lemon cupcakes, carrot cake, victoria sponge and lemon layer cake.

Bells dedicates a team of workers to the contract, led by master baker Anthony Tiffing.

And such are the exacting demands of Costa that only right-handed staff are allowed to ice the cupcakes, as left-handed bakers are unable to provide the necessary ‘flick’ to the frosting.

Bells of Lazonby managing director Michael Bell said: “We are very proud of our cakes and very proud to be an official Costa supplier.

“It’s a feather in our cap to supply to the number one coffee shop in the UK.

“We stick to our established principles when it comes to producing best tasting, high quality cakes and we hope customers enjoy the care and attention we put into each bite.”

Rachel Hope, food development manager for Costa, said: “When we develop and source our products, we scour the country to find the real experts.

“We love to support British manufacturers and work with lots of small family-run bakeries like Bells, who have real heritage in baking fantastic cakes.

“We’re incredibly proud of the quality of our products and look forward to developing even more delicious, seasonal goodies for our customers.”

Bells of Lazonby was founded in 1946 by John Bell, the father of current boss Michael.

The company received The Queen’s Award for Innovation for its pioneering organic and innovative special diet bakery in 2006.
