Carlisle shop celebrates 10th anniversary

An independent greetings card retailer that took on the might of the multiples celebrates its 10th anniversary next week.
Denise Kirsopp opened The Card Shop in Salisbury Road, Currock, Carlisle, in October 2003. Despite competition from the likes of Clinton, and latterly online retailers such as Moonpig, it has won a loyal band of customers.
Mrs Kirsopp, 52, launched the business after leaving her job of 17 years at Clarks shoe shop in The Lanes, Carlisle.
She said: “We knew that, whatever we called it, people would say ‘I’m going to the card shop’. So that’s what it’s called.”
In fact, it sells more than cards – from christening sets, picture frames and paper weights to teddy bears, key rings and batteries.
Mrs Kirsopp said: “The first two years were difficult, as anyone who has opened a business will be aware.
“You invest your own money and put in extremely long hours, taking little out in the way of wages.
“Then it seemed to click. Word gets around. I get whole families who shop with me now – children, parents and grandparents. Some have shopped with me for so long they’re more like friends.”
Unusually, cards are displayed by price level rather than by theme.
There is a value range at 60p, a mid-priced range at £1 and a more expensive selection at £1.50 plus.
Mrs Kirsopp says this suits her customers who know exactly what they are prepared to pay.
She added: “There is definitely a place for independent businesses.
“The chain shops are losing the personal touch. Everything there has to be done in a certain way.
“It is the individuality that sets independent businesses apart.
“People come in and, if I’m not busy, I’ll happily talk about their family or holidays.”
