Work is underway to reopen Carlisle’s popular Viceroy restaurant.

The curry house became a flood victim for the second time in 11 years when Storm Desmond hit the city late last year.

It was the second time that it had been forced to close, having been shut for 13 months after the floods of January 2005.

Owner Sukur Ali says he can no longer insure the building so has no option but to move the restaurant across the road, where it will sit above Ali’s Takeaway, which he also owns.

His son, Alamgir, who works with his father, is delighted to be getting things underway. He said: “[When work is finished] it will look nothing like anything Carlisle has seen before in terms of restaurants. We are keeping it all close to our chests at the moment.”

The restaurant is set to have 80 covers and employ 12 people, creating four new jobs. No date has yet been set for its opening.

Ali’s Takeaway is also running a special ‘golden ticket’ promotion, which will see vouchers giving people £40 off a meal at the reopened restaurant given out with orders. ***Advertising have been told about this***
