Up to 60 delivery firm workers have been warned they could lose their jobs.

A total of about 60 staff – around 40 drivers and 20 warehouse staff – will be affected by the redundancy plan at the FedEx distribution hub in Gretna.

The hub employs people from Carlisle and across the north of Cumbria, as well as from south west Scotland.

Staff were told this week that they could lose their jobs on December 31 – after the busy Christmas period.

It is not clear whether the Gretna hub will remain open beyond that.

A FedEx spokeswoman confirmed that discussions were ongoing but refused to provide any details about exactly how many staff could be affected or what would happen to the depot.

“FedEx continually reviews its operational network to ensure that it is efficient and providing customers the best possible service levels,” she said.

“We are currently in a consultation process with employees that work in our night sort operations at our Gretna Hub.

“As this consultation is presently ongoing it is not appropriate to comment further at this time.”

Staff members contacted the News & Star following the redundancy announcement.

One said: “Delivery drivers and warehouse personnel are all getting laid off. About 50 to 60 employees.”

He added that the announcement has come at the worst possible time for many, who face the prospect of losing their livelihood before or just after Christmas. Some are already searching for new jobs.

Another said: “Most people are in shock.”

The FedEx Gretna hub covers much of Scotland and the entire north of England.
