Carlisle's famous Ginger Nuts biscuits are back on sale - just over four months since the site that makes them was hit by the floods.

McVitie’s, the manufacturer with a factory in Caldewgate, announced the treats were once again on the shelves after December’s disaster struck its baking.

Other household favourites by McVitie’s, including custard creams and bourbons, will also be returning to supermarkets, said the company.

Mark Taylor, manufacturing director at United Biscuits, owner of the McVitie’s brand, spoke about the move.

He said: “It’s four months almost to the day since the flooding.

“We’re delighted that loyal consumers and fans of our products will be able to enjoy their favourite biscuits again, including our famous McVitie’s Ginger Nuts.

“We know how popular our brands are and how disappointing it has been waiting their return.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience in bearing with us.”

Production at the factory was halted on December 5 due to substantial flood damage to the electrical equipment and ovens.

After being submerged in 39.2 million litres of water, 540 tonnes of debris was cleared from the site to allow for normal production to get going again.

Mr Taylor added: “Over the past four months we’ve come together to get the factory back up and running as quickly as possible.

“Full production has now resumed.

“We couldn’t be happier or more thankful to everyone that has helped and supported us in getting the factory back up and running.”

Bosses from United Biscuits’ Turkish parent company have praised the efforts of the workforce.

Ali Ulker, vice chairman of Yildiz, visited the site last month, saying he was proud to witness the speedy turnaround at the factory.

Prince Charles also visited the site as he came to Cumbria to see the fightback after the floods.
