Attacking intent pays off for Penrith girls

Penrith 6 Brampton 0: Penrith played some fine attacking football against an under strength Brampton team which put on a battling performance despite being over-run on many occasions.

Penrith were very good when going forward and they scored three goals in each half to win by six goals to nil.

Penrith attacked from the off and they got off to a flying start when Emma Sterland scored following a corner kick.

It was Ailsa McAlister who gave the corner away when she hastily got a foot in the way of a shot from Chloe Hunter.

Harley Cummins delivered the corner from the left and the ball landed at the foot of Ella Rinder who played a neat short pass to Emma Sterland who scored from close range.

Hunter and Cummins each had shooting chances but they were both guilty of ballooning the ball high over the bar.

Brampton were not afraid to attack and Penrith goalkeeper, Megan Wilson, made a good save from the Brampton striker Joanne McCormick following good build up play from Leah Noble and Siobhan Carr.

Penrith doubled their lead in the fifteenth minute when a long ball from Emily Slattery enabled Emma Sterland to get to the ball before the Brampton defenders to score with consummate ease.

Brampton pushed forward whenever possible and McCormick was unlucky when her well struck shot cannoned off the crossbar. Rinder and Warwick interchanged passes to set up Hunter but the mid-fielder again blazed her shot high over the bar.

Cummins and Emma Sterland both had efforts on goal which were capably dealt with by Hill who was covering herself in mud and glory in the Brampton goal.

Brampton went on the attack when a clearance from McAllister found McCormick and the tall striker did well to get herself into a shooting position but she was unable to beat Wilson whose safe hands plucked the rising ball out of the air.

Penrith drove forward with intent and they were rewarded with a third goal just before half-time.

The scorer was Becky Sterland the twin sister of Emma who had bagged the first and second goals.

Penrith had the bulk of the possession in the early part of the second half but Brampton’s McCormick was always a danger as she proved when she finished a strong solo run with a shot which was wide of the far post.

Penrith gained a corner when McAllister sliced her clearance from a dangerous cross from Emma Sterland. Cummins took the resulting corner which was cleared by McAllister.

Emma Sterland tricked her way past two defenders before crossing to the back post where Rinder unleashed a terrific left foot volley which brought a brilliant diving save from Hill who winded herself in the process.

Becky Sterland cleverly dribbled her way into the danger area but she was eventually halted by the combined efforts of Hill and Claire Schofield.

Hill then made a good save from Cummins but it was just a matter of time before the home team increased their lead and it eventually arrived when Cummins beat Hill with a terrific right foot shot on the turn. A fifth goal soon followed when Becky Sterland turned in a centre from Megan Gibson for her second goal of the game. Worse was to follow for Brampton when Hunter struck a low shot from the edge of the penalty area and the ball squirmed beneath the body of the diving Hill into the net for Penrith’s sixth goal.

The Penrith attacks were relentless and it took a combination of Noble and Victoria Walsh to prevent Becky Sterland getting in her cross. The resulting corner was cleared out of harm’s way by Walsh.

Carr gave the visitors some brief respite when she made a solo run on the left before trying a shot which was saved by Wilson. Back came Penrith and Hill made a good save from Hunter before Walsh conceded a corner with a terrific tackle on Emma Sterland.

Walsh and Hunter were involved in a heavy collision which resulted in a free-kick for Brampton. The visitors fought to the very end with Noble gaining a corner following a tricky run on the right and Schofield testing Wilson with a left foot shot following a speedy break on the left. Penrith came close to scoring a seventh goal when Shai Hutchinson’s shot missed the target by the narrowest of margins.
