Penrith 1 Ashington 1: Penrith picked up their first points of 2010 after surrendering a first half lead against Ashington at Frenchfield Park.
The Cumbrians produced a superb first half performance with Michael Brown and Dean Douglas both going close before Dan Robinson tapped in a rebound to put the home side ahead.
The home side had dominated the first half where Robinson and Graham Anthony both went close only to see there efforts fly just wide.
But a spirited second half Ashington performance, watched by England cricket star Steve Harmison, saw the north east side pull level through striker Lee Hamilton.
And Penrith were left to rue a series of missed chances as the game ended in a stalemate despite Dean Douglas missing two good chances in the latter part of he second half.
The visitors had showed little in terms of attacking options, leaving Penrith joint manager James Tose disappointed at only picking up a point.
“The first half was a real improvement from recent games and I think we showed that we are more than a match for the teams at the top of this league,” he said.
Tose had special praise for winger Douglas, who had looked lively throughout the game, after being left on the bench for the previous game against Ryton.
“It’s nice to see players wanting to prove a point and if we ca play like that every week till the end of the season then I have no doubt that we will be climbing the table soon,” he said.
