Doing it large: Ascendance Rep, dancing at cathedral on Saturday

Ascendance Rep will perform a major new dance work, Standing Stones in the cathedral tomorrow afternoon.

The work, designed by leading choreographer Jacky Lansley, celebrates the magnificent architecture of cathedrals, the strength of their stone and their timeless quality.

It is performed in four stages, each accompanied by a movement from Mozart’s clarinet quintet.

The four dancers are Katie Keeble and Paul Wilkinson, both from England, Ayano Honda from Japan and Daniella Ferreira from South Africa. All trained at leading dance conservatoires and have toured with major dance companies.

Musicians from Cornish Sinfonia provide the accompaniment.

Ascendance Rep specialise in performing in unusual venues such as art galleries, railway stations and bookshops.

The dancers’ Standing Stones tour, which began in mid-June, has so far has taken them to York Minster and Bradford, Norwich, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Exeter and Bristol cathedrals. Tomorrow’s performance in Carlisle will be the last of their summer dates.

Standing Stones begins at 12.45pm. Tickets cost £6.
