n Youngsters aged between nine and 15 took part in a junior fly-fishing day on the Holme Farm beat of the river Eden at Appleby.

The day was organised by Appleby Angling Association and funded by the Environment Agency with tuition provided by Borderlines instructors assisted by expert fly tier Stuart Kinnear.

Following a safety talk and after learning about the country code and angling etiquette, the youngsters split into three groups, and during the morning each group learned about entomology, dipping for and identifying invertebrate life in the river Eden, before trying fly tying and learning how to both overhead and roll cast safely and efficiently.

Following lunch everyone tried fishing for themselves with Graham Leslie aged 10 of Appleby catching the first fish of the day a lovely brown trout of around 1lb.

Lewis Burbeck, aged nine, of Burrells and Sam Hoy, aged 13, of Appleby also landed trout.

The day finished with an accuracy fly-casting competition which was won by Aran Cringle who did well to amass 37 points in two minutes.

Chris Pigney 13, Marcus Bishop 13 and Liam Kinnear 13, all tied for second place with 20 points.

Graham Leslie’s fly was judged to be the best tied on the day with Chris Pigney’s second and Sam Hoy’s third.

All the participants received certificates and a £5 tackle voucher at the end of the day and Sam Hoy was presented with a fly rod, reel and line for being the best all rounder on the day the outfit was donated by Appleby AA committee member Paul Richardson.
